Resources

Undergraduate

Emory's Residence Life and Housing Operations provides on-campus student housing to undergraduates. There are several residence hall options on both the Atlanta and Clairmont campuses. Residence hall housing is fully furnished, and all utilities (such as water, gas, electricity, internet service, and Emory cable TV) are included in the housing rate.

Residence halls remain open during academic holidays during the fall and spring semesters, and most students are eligible for residential housing during the winter break between the fall and spring semesters.

Graduate

The Ridge is a new on-campus housing option for Emory graduate/professional students and postdoctoral fellows. The Ridge offers fully furnished studios, 1-bedroom and 2-bedroom apartments. Utilities and internet service are included in the monthly rental cost. The community also features communal indoor and outdoor gathering spaces, study rooms, mail and package receiving services as well as a fitness center. A dedicated parking garage with space for bike storage is also available. Contact the leasing office directly at TheRidge@americancampus.com or by phone at 470-508-7688.

Visit Emory's Off-Campus and Graduate Housing page for more information.

Important: Before starting a rental search, review off-campus housing's safety tips to avoid scams and fraud.

Temporary Housing

Upon their arrival in Atlanta, some international students and scholars may need temporary accommodations to allow time to find more permanent off campus housing. ISSS recommends they contact their department or school for recommendations.

Off-Campus Housing Options

Emory's Off-Campus Housing website is designed to help Emory students, faculty, and staff find available housing. The site also has a feature to help students find roommates.

Campus Crossings-Briarcliff is located near campus and offers furnished 1-, 2-, and 3-bedroom apartments to Emory graduate and professional students. Contact the leasing office here or by phone at 844-792-5107.

There are also a number of other apartment complexes nearby:

Costs

Housing costs vary greatly depending upon location, amenities, age of the building, etc. Generally, rent will range from $800 - $2000 per month. Usually, the rent payment does not include utility costs like electricity, heat, internet, or cable. Students and scholars should be prepared to pay some initial start-up costs. These costs will vary by landlord/management company but may include the following:

  • First and last months rent
  • Security deposit
  • Household necessities (furniture, furnishings, cookware, etc.)
  • Fees to establish utilities like electricity, water, natural gas, cable and internet
Questions to Ask

Before signing a lease agreement, students/scholars might want to ask the following questions:

  • How long is the lease?
  • When is rent due each month?
  • Do I need to pay a security deposit? If so, how much is it? Will it be refunded at the end of the lease?
  • Are there restrictions on pets or guests?
  • Who will take care of maintenance and repairs?
  • What is the parking availability (if have a car)?
  • Is the apartment furnished or unfurnished?
  • What appliances are included (refrigerator, stove, oven, dishwasher, mircowave, washing machine, dryer, etc.)
  • Are there laundry facilities on-site?
  • Are utilities (gas, electricity, water, garbage collection, cable/internet etc.) included with the rent?

Utilities

If renting an apartment off campus, students/scholars should ask which utilities are included. Sometimes apartment complexes will include utilities such as water and garbage pickup in their rent payment. Usually, the renter will need to contact utility companies to set up their service for electricity, cable and internet, natural gas, etc.

As of December 2020, the following companies do not require a social security number (SSN) to set up service:

Furniture

Normally, rentals in the US come unfurnished. They will have a stove, oven and refrigerator, and depending on the apartment/house, it may include other appliances such as microwave, dishwasher, washing machine, dryer etc. In most cases, the renter is responsible for providing their own furniture (bed, sofa, chairs, desk, etc.), furnishings/home goods (cookware, bedding, towels, etc.) and smaller appliances. Students and scholars can either rent or buy furniture while at Emory. The lists below are for informational purposes only.
