The following are additional pre-arrival tasks for J-1 scholars only. All H-1B, O-1, TN or E-3 scholars may move ahead to Step 4: Apply for a US Visa.
In addition to the items listed on the New Scholar Pre-arrival Checklist, all J-1 scholars will need to complete the following tasks:
- Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee.
- This must be completed prior to applying for the J-1 visa.
- Find the SEVIS number on the Emory issued DS-2019.
- Submit the SEVIS fee payment online or via Western Union Quick Pay.
- Print the receipt, and keep a copy for the scholar's records.
- The scholar will need to submit a copy of the receipt when they complete the online visa application and at their visa interview.

- Review the J-1 health insurance requirements.
- Exchange visitors (the J-1 scholar and any accompanying J-2 dependents) are legally required to carry health insurance while they are in the US.
- Scholars can expect to pay about $100-200 per month for insurance.
- If a scholar fails to purchase and maintain adequate health insurance, their J-1 program will be terminated.
