Transfer a SEVIS Record to Emory

Content
Body

International students requiring immigration sponsorship from Emory will need to request to have their SEVIS record transferred to Emory if:

  • they are newly admitted and attending another US institution in F-1 or J-1 status; or
  • they are already an Emory student under different sponsorship (e.g. J-1 Fulbright student).

The current school/program must determine whether the student is eligible for a SEVIS transfer, and if so, use the appropriate code below to electronically transfer the student's SEVIS record to Emory.

F-1 Students:
  • SEVIS school code for all F-1 students attending the Atlanta campus: ATL214F00135000.
  • SEVIS school code for all F-1 students attending the Oxford campus: ATL214F00135001.
J-1 Students:
  • Emory's program code for all J-1 students: P-1-00874.

Transfer Procedure:

  1. Contact the DSO (international student advisor) at the current institution to discuss transferring to Emory and determine an appropriate “SEVIS release date” (the date the SEVIS record will be transferred to Emory).
    • Emory's SEVIS School Codes:
    • Emory does not have a required "Transfer Clearance" form for DSOs at the transfer-out school to complete.
    • A student's SEVIS record must be in "Active" status for Emory to accept the SEVIS transfer.
      • If a student's SEVIS record is in inactive status, they must request an "Initial" status I-20.

  2. Complete Emory’s I-20 Request
    • Complete the New Student I-20 Request form in ISSS Link.
    • The information provided by the student in this e-form will be used to:
      • arrange the transfer of the SEVIS record to Emory; and
      • create a transfer-pending I-20.
    • For more information on the I-20 request process visit, ISSS' I-20/DS-2019 Request Process page.

  3. After the SEVIS record is released to Emory, Emory will issue a transfer-pending I-20.
    • The transfer-pending I-20 issued by Emory is the document the student should present when reentering the US after traveling abroad.
    • SEVIS transfer students must not enter the US using an I-20 issued by their previous institution.

Selecting A SEVIS Release Date

Graduating F-1s

Students need to have their SEVIS record transferred to Emory within 60 days of:

  • graduating from their previous institution; or
  • finishing a period of post-completion Optional Practical Training (OPT) or STEM OPT.

This 60-day period is the grace period.

Transferring During OPT/STEM OPT

A student's current international student advisor can initiate the transfer of a student's SEVIS record to Emory while the student is in a period of post-completion OPT or STEM OPT, or within the 60-day grace period after their post-completion OPT or STEM OPT end date.

Important:

  • Once the SEVIS release date has passed, the OPT authorization will automatically end, even if the end date on the EAD card is in the future.
  • Students should confirm their last day of employment before deciding their SEVIS release date.
  • Students who are unsure about timing should contact their current institution's international student advisor for assistance.
Mid-Program Transfers

Students who want to transfer to Emory in the middle of a program at another institution should first contact an Emory ISSS Advisor. An international student advisor can discuss how to avoid immigration difficulties.

Transfer Procedure:

  1. Contact the international student advisor at the current institution to discuss transferring to Emory and to determine an appropriate “SEVIS release date” (the date the SEVIS record will be transferred to Emory).
    • Emory's program code is P-1-00874 for all J-1 students.
    • The student and their current A/RO (international student advisor) will need to complete a J-1 Student Transfer-In Request (pdf) form.
      • The student will upload a scanned copy of the form when completing the J-1 Student Request form in ISSS Link.
    • A student's SEVIS record must be in "Active" status for Emory to accept the SEVIS transfer.
      • If a student's SEVIS record is in inactive status, they must request an "Initial" status DS-2019.

  2. Complete Emory’s DS-2019 Request
    • Complete the J-1 Student Request form in ISSS Link.
      • The information provided by the student in this e-form will be used to:
        • arrange the transfer of the SEVIS record to Emory; and
        • create a DS-2019.
      • For more information on the DS-2019 request process visit, ISSS' I-20/DS-2019 Request Process page.
    • Fulbright students who want to transfer to Emory sponsorship should email newfjstudent@emory.edu to receive the next steps.

  3. After the SEVIS record is released to Emory, Emory will issue an updated DS-2019.
    • The new DS-2019 issued by Emory is the document the student should present when reentering the US after traveling abroad.
    • SEVIS transfer students must not enter the US using a DS-2019 from their previous institution/program sponsor.

Selecting a SEVIS Release Date

Graduating J-1s

J-1 students who are graduating from another institution will need to have their SEVIS record transferred to Emory before their DS-2019 form expires or before their program completion date, whichever is earlier.

Mid-Program Transfers

Students who want to transfer to Emory in the middle of a program at another institution, should first contact an Emory ISSS Advisor. An international student advisor can discuss how to avoid immigration difficulties.
