Extending an I-20/DS-2019

Body

Students who will not finish their program by the end date on their I-20/DS-2019 may request a program extension in ISSS Link. Extensions can be granted if the delay is caused by a legitimate academic reason or documented illness. Not acceptable reasons for a program extension include: participation in Curricular Practical Training (F-1s), participation in Academic Training (AT), or delays caused by academic probation or suspension.

It is highly recommended that students follow the procedures outlined below at least 30 days prior to their current I-20/DS-2019 end date to give the student's departmental reviewer (academic advisor, dean, program director, etc.) and ISSS time to process the request. The I-20/DS-2019 must be extended before the current end date to be eligible for an extension.

A student is eligible for an extension if:

  • The student has a current I-94 record showing duration of status (D/S)
  • The student has maintained their international student status and is making academic progress
  • The delay is caused by legitimate academic reasons. Examples include:
    • change of major or research topic
    • loss of credits when transferring to Emory
    • unexpected research problems
    • documented illness

Non-Degree J-1 Students Only:

  • The maximum program length for a J-1 non-degree student is 24 months which is inclusive of any Academic Training period.
  • Bi-lateral exchange students must check with their exchange program coordinator to make sure the exchange agreement allows an extension.

  1. Discuss the extension with the departmental reviewer (academic advisor, dean, program director, etc.) and confirm that the university information system, OPUS, has been updated to reflect the new expected program completion date.

  2. Log in to ISSS Link and complete one of the following e-forms:
    • "I-20 Extension Request" (F-1 students)
    • "DS-2019 Extension Request" (J-1 students)

  3. Upload supporting documentation and submit the e-form.
    • Supporting Documents
      • F-1 Students will need to provide new financial documentation if there has been a change in their source of funding.
      • J-1 Students are required to upload the following:
        • Financial documentation that covers all estimated expenses for the extension period.
        • Proof of health insurance for the J-1 and any J-2 dependents (if applicable).
    • Financial Documentation Resources
  4. Upon submission of the e-form, the student's departmental reviewer will receive an e-mail requesting that they log into ISSS Link and approve the request (i.e. verify the student's new expected program completion date and provide the reason for the delay).

  5. Once reviewed by the academic department, the student's ISSS advisor will review the request within five business days and determine if the student is eligible for an extension. If approved, the student will receive an e-mail letting them know that their new I-20/DS-2919 is ready.
