Eligibility | - Admission to a full-time program.
| - Admission to a full-time program, plus:
- The exchange is based on a written agreement between the US and a foreign government;
- The exchange is based on a written bilateral agreement between Emory and a foreign institution; or
- The student will receive US or foreign government funding for their J-1 student stay; and the government agency requires the student to hold the J-1 student status.
- J-1 students aren't allowed in a program that has patient contact or clinical care components.
|
Funding | - The student provides financial documentation showing funding for their first 12 months (or the length of their program, if it's less than a year).
- Emory ISSS issues an I-20 valid for the length of the program.
| - The DS-2019 form expiration date depends on the amount of funding the student can show. If the student has one year of funding, the DS-2019 will be valid for one year.
- If a student can't show documentation of funding for the entire length of their program, they have to keep providing funding documentation throughout their program.
- The end date on the DS-2019 will also be the end date on other US documents, like a driver's license or a spouse's work permit. Thus, those documents need to be renewed each time the DS-2019 is renewed.
|
Dependents | - F-2 children and spouses can enroll part-time in a degree program at an SEVP-certified school or university.
- F-2 children can be enrolled full-time in elementary or secondary education (K-12).
- Full-time enrollment at the college level is prohibited for F-2 dependents.
| - J-2 dependents can study and apply for work authorization.
|
Health Insurance | - Emory requires all students to have health insurance.
- It is strongly recommended that F-1 students obtain coverage for F-2 dependents.
| - In addition to Emory's requirement that all students have health insurance, J-2 dependents are legally required to carry insurance that meets the US Department of State minimums.
- For more information including health insurance federal requirements visit ISSS' J-1/J-2 Health Insurance Requirements page.
|
On-Campus Employment | - F-1 students can work up to 20 hours per week while school is in session and full time during breaks.
- Upon receiving an employment offer, F-1 students need to apply for a social security number (SSN).
| - J-1 students can work up to 20 hours per week while school is in session and full time during breaks.
- Prior to beginning on-campus employment, J-1 students must first obtain approval from their ISSS advisor. J-1 on-campus employment authorization must be renewed every year.
- They must also apply for a social security number (SSN).
|
Off-Campus Employment | | |
2-Year Home Residency Requirement [212(e)] | | - Some J-1 students are subject to 212(e) due to receiving government funding or studying a field on the Skills List.
- If found subject to 212(e), a J-1 student is required to return to their home country for two years after their program and may be ineligible for certain US visas in the future.
|
Transfers | - F-1 students can transfer to a new school either in the middle of their program or within 60 days after finishing their program.
| J-1 students can: - transfer to a new school before their DS-2019 expires.
- "matriculate" by moving up a degree level, from bachelor's to master's, or from master's to PhD.
J-1 students can't: - "reverse matriculate," by moving from PhD to master's, for example.
- change from non-degree to degree-seeking, or vice versa.
