Students:
Family members planning to travel to the US to visit their Emory student may need to apply for a B-1/B-2 visa. If desired, ISSS can create an optional invitation letter for an enrolled student's spouse, parent, or child. Request a family invitation letter by logging into ISSS Link.
Scholars:
Scholars may use their employment or appointment letter from Emory in lieu of an invitation letter.
Before an initial I-20 or DS-2019 can be issued, international students must provide ISSS with documentation proving they have adequate funding. All financial documents should meet the following criteria:
- Less than 12 months old at the time of the I-20 or DS-2019 Request submission
- Written in English, or accompanied by official translation
- Funds must be immediately available, i.e. liquid assets, or can be withdrawn to pay the student bill
- If the account(s) is not in the student's name, students must include a completed Financial Sponsor Form.

The I-765 form is the application students submit to USCIS to apply for Optional Practical Training, the STEM Extension, and Severe Economic Hardship. USCIS provides Form I-765 instructions. Additionally, depending on how the application will be filed with USCIS (online or by mail), students can refer to one of the following ISSS resources:

- Form I-983 is the Training Plan for the STEM Extension.
- Before a student can apply for the STEM Extension, they must complete this form with their employer.
- During the STEM Extension, if there are any material changes to the information recorded in the Form I-983, the student is required to update the form and submit it to ISSS. Students can upload the new I-983 using the STEM OPT Employment Material Change Reporting e-form in ISSS Link.
- Students will also complete this form to evaluate their STEM Extension at the 12-month mark and 24-month mark.
- They must also submit the Final Evaluation on page 5 within 10 calendar days of leaving their position or employer.
