  • For life-threatening emergencies, contact 911 (if off campus) or Emory Campus Police at 404.727.6111 (if on campus).
  • Emory offers a comprehensive range of supportive services and resources that are available to every member of the university community including students, faculty, staff, family, and friends.
  • International students and scholars experiencing an immigration related emergency should contact ISSS:

    • If outside of regular office hours, call the Emory Police Department at 404.727.6111 and their dispatcher will connect the caller with an ISSS staff member.

The Emory Intercultural Leadership Program (EILP) is an academic-year-long cohort program that promotes leadership development which is inclusive, purposeful, collaborative, and values-based. By participating in the EILP, international and domestic students will receive training on global leadership skills and intercultural competency development, attend cultural and leadership events, participate in a service-learning project, and share their cultures and perspectives with each other and the Emory community. Upon successful completion of the program requirements, students will receive a certificate.

The EIC is a diverse group of selected international students from various schools at Emory University. EIC members meet one to two times monthly with ISSS senior staff as representatives of international students to generate new program ideas that will support international students and foster connections between the US and international students. The EIC will provide suggestions and input on ISSS programs and offer new ideas about the types of support and services that will help international students have a fulfilling Emory experience. Upon successful completion of the program requirements, members will receive a certificate.

Any change to an international scholar’s employment – such as a change in department/position or promotion, change in work sites or work hours, or change in program length (extension or shorten) – require additional immigration procedures that the department and the scholar will need to follow before the change takes place.

  • If a scholar is hosted or hired by Emory, the scholar and department must speak with their ISSS advisor who can advise on how the change may impact the scholar’s immigration status.

  • If a department is hosting a J-1 Exchange Visitor sponsored by an organization other than Emory (such as Fulbright), the J-1 scholar will need to contact their sponsor directly about their procedures.

Emory and the Atlanta community offer a variety of resources to those interested in improving their English language skills. Click "Learn More" for a list of Emory resources a well as free and fee-based classes.

To maintain F-1 or J-1 student status, international students must meet certain enrollment requirements.

  • Undergraduate students must enroll in and complete 12 credits each semester.
  • PhD students must enroll in and complete 9 credits each semester.
  • For other graduate and professional school students, the course load is defined by the student's program or school.

International students attending Emory as non-degree seeking exchange students will be issued a DS-2019 and will apply for a J-1 visa. To learn how to request a DS-2019 as an exchange student, click "Learn More."

International scholars may be eligible for an extension depending on their status. Scholars should speak with their ISSS advisor to determine if they are eligible to extend their current status. If eligible, the scholar should follow the steps below:

  • Discuss with their department to determine if the department is willing to sponsor the scholar for an extension.
  • If so, the department will initiate the extension process in ISSS Link.

F-1 and J-1 students who need additional time to complete their program should discuss their academic requirements with their academic advisor and then submit the I-20 Extension Request or DS-2019 Extension Request form on ISSS Link at least 30 days before the I-20 or DS-2019 end date.
